1/4 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 cup sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. each cinnamon and nutmeg
1 (8 oz) pkg. pitted dates, coarsely chopped
1 cup walnuts or pecans, coarsely chopped
1 cup Muscatel, Port or Sherry wine
Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and beat until blended. Mix dry ingredients, add dates and nuts. Alternately add wine and dry ingredients to creamed mixture, beating well. Turn into greased and floured 9×12″ pan. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
